Regina and I went to the circus last night and it was an amazing experience. We watched a performance called "Sokha" which is based on the rue stories of the founders of the Phare Ponleu Selpak School. The performance is about a young girl haunted by war. Her memories of the Khmer Rouge combine with surreal visions to create a distorted and dark reality.
But through circus she discovers her strength and finds the tools to heal both herself and her community. Sokha is a powerful mix of contemporary circus techniques, live painting, and original, live music.
Phare The Cambodian Circus is so much more than a conventional circus, with an emphasis on performance art and a subtle yet striking social message behind each production.
