Mode of transportation hell Part II
From Bangka we thought it would be a “fun adventure” to go by hydrofoil (high speed boat) from Bangka to Belitung. What a lovely way to spend 4 hours, but to transverse the Karimata Straits and Gaspar Straits and appreciate the beauty of the ocean. WRONG!!! I should have known something was amiss when the people from the boat handed out plastic bags for motion sickness. The hydrofoil was rather small, but at least the VIP section was air conditioned. The stairs were packed with luggage and people, as well as the floor. The “Executive” seats below were crowded with more packages and people. It was beautiful for the first hour. Then the rough seas battered the boat, causing the boat to weave and bob in the water like a little toy. Soon the sounds of people getting sick were the only sounds I could hear above a little one crying and shouting pulang (I want to go home!). I was fortunate, as long as I didn’t attempt to look for the horizon. What was supposed to be an idyllic sea trip turned into five hours of shear torture. So much for the sunset at the island of Belitung. We arrived in pitch dark, and it was then we decided we needed to upgrade our hotel, to one that was closer to the beach, newer and cleaner. I finally sank into the clean, soft sheets after grabbing a bite of local fish. I knew the next day had to be better
