Bureaucracy Part 2

Monday war our second attempt to open my bank account. We had arrived the previous day five minutes before the bank was to close. How we managed to weave and bob through the traffic at 2:45 was by the very talented driver, Pak Toto.
However, ten minutes after we arrived, and had been sitting we were told to come back the next day.
Tuesday morning we arrived at the bank at 8:10 am and did not leave until 11:00 am. Now in all fairness, four of us needed to open bank accounts. First we went to a woman behind a desk, who started the process. However, people were constantly coming in and giving her their bank books, so she was taking care of them also. After about a half hour, this young lady stood up, locked her desk and went somewhere.
Then a very tall gentleman looked at the applications and passed them to anther gentleman who appeared to be rushing about. Finally, the young lady came back, and after much talking back and forth we were able to proceed upstairs to deposit into our bank account. That line was very long also, and we waited for quite a while. After depositing money into the account we had to return to the original desk to now receive our atm cards. Throughout this entire process they must have needed my signature at least 10 times. Each time they needed to verify the signature as I had written it on my passport. In fact, one of the new teachers had to keep writing her signature over and over again, because the bank personnel did not think it matched her id card. Finally, with atm card in hand, and a headache I was able to leave.

Happy 4th of July to everyone- I’m celebrating by working. I’m here at school envious that you are all having barbeques, hanging out at picnics, beaches, rivers, eating watermelon, chicken, and blueberry pie. Their independence day is August 17th so I am curious as to how they celebrate.

Carol, Each morning I hurry to the computer to read about your latest adventure. I am very interested in your daily life. The pictures are a real treat and I look forward to hearing about the school. I miss you at the Y but I'm glad you found a place to exercise.

Hi Carol. The whole bank scene sounds like a nightmare. I guess it makes you wonder about depositing your money there.

Today, July 4th, the weather is cloudy and humid. It rained a little this morning. I think it is suppose to be mainly cloudy all weekend. What is the weather like there? Do they get a lot of rain?

I enjoy reading your blogs and look forward to hearing about the kids and school. I know you have a lot to do so blog when you can. Try not to overwhelm yourself and feel like you have to do everything. I know this is probably impossible.

I continue to pray and think of you.

Peace and Love
Michele T.

Hey, older sister! Your exploits to the bank certainly made me chuckle. Since patience is a sometimes dormant trait for some of us Murphys, I would have given 1 billion rupias to be a fly on the wall during the transactions. Or would that be a cockroach on the floor?!?!

As far as the celebration of the Fourth goes, it's all a matter of perspective. While the comforts of the familiar American barbecue are certainly enjoyable, you will certainly have memories of this Fourth that will make it more outstanding--even if it the day was spent in school. Friends of ours have a pig roast (to which half the town is invited/present). I have at least learned from years past to go later AFTER the 'guest of honor' (whose moniker is Julius--this year it was Julius V) has been brought to the table. Nonetheless, the head is always prominently displayed, right beside the other food: hot dogs, beans and coleslaw. Oh, one section of the table also has cookies, brownies, etc. Needless to say, I eat beforehand and/or head straight for the keg. So while you envision the Norman Rockwell American dream picnic, remember that somewhere Julius VI is running wild in a pigpen, clueless as to his future fate!

I hope the bank situation is all cleared up. You really need to replenish you back-home funds since I've pretty much depleted your account shopping on the QVC network!

Take care and keep on blogging.
Love, Lisa

Carol,

I lost my ATM card recently....I feel your pain. I actually cried (a womans' perogative) to prove my case when my stolen card was used to purchase gas...(smart thieves...gas is over $4 a gallon here.) Between the DMV and the bank you will have an over abundance of patience!

Lisa, I have several QVC purchases that I need to make...can you call me, and we can work together for the greater good, I am sure that Carol won't mind!

Oh yeah...Carol, send PICS of your latest adventures!

Eileen

Well if anything, the whole bank experience teaches me that if Carol Murphy was able to keep her trap shut...miracles do happen. Glad to hear you are growing in patience!

Keep having fun,
Hope

Hey Girl,
I've finally caught up on your blogs and found myself laughing, gasping and almost crying at your experiences. Your not in Kansas anymore! Your tales are amazing. Keep your blogs, you may have a book in the making. What amazes me is how much some of your adventures remind me of our trips to Peru. For example, it used to take us at least an hour to withdraw money from our bank account and we had to stand in 3 different queues to accomplish the task. But at least we had toilets that flushed! and what do you mean . . . no toilet paper! Yikes!
A just sent you a snail mail and will write again soon. Keep the postings coming.
I miss you and keep you in my prayers,
Melissa

Lisa & Eileen-
Don't get any ideas about QVC - I don't think they take rupiahs.
Also - Lisa- Julius 4 footed cousin is here! it's not a pig- since it's muslim - it's goats. After Ramadan (Sept-Oct. this year) there will be herding of the goats. They apparently look very cute going down the street- they don't know that they're on their way to slaughter!
